W. D. Gaster foi o Cientista Real antes de Alphys, e é dito que era impossível substituí-lo por ele ser brilhante.[1] Os Seguidores de Gaster dizem que ele foi responsável pela criação do Núcleo[2] e que desapareceu. Durante um jogo normal, W. D. Gaster normalmente não é mencionado. Apesar disso, a Pessoa do Rio, eventos de Fun Value raros e certas Salas Inacessíveis indicam sua existência. Isso inclui a Sala 264, chamada room_gaster.
Particularmente, cada um dos seguidores de Gaster fala de seu fim de um modo diferente. Um diz que ele "caiu em sua criação", o segundo diz que "os experimentos dele deram errado" e o terceiro diz que ele "foi espalhado pelo tempo e espaço". Parecido com Sans e Papyrus, o diálogo de W. D. Gaster usa um tipo único de fonte, chamado Wingdings.

Salas 268 e 269[]
Mystery Man surpreso.
Na Sala 269 (room_mysteryman), uma figura (spr_mysteryman) que muitos acreditam ser Gaster pode ser achada. Ela é preta e branca com um rosto rachado e distorcido. Diferente de outros NPCs, ela não tem física de colisão e interagir com ela a faz exprimir uma reação de surpresa e sumir enquanto um efeito sonoro toca.
Essa sala só pode ser acessada quando a fun value (que pode ser alterada editando o file0 e undertale.ini) é posta em 66. Neste cenário, a Sala 268 (room_water_fakehallway), um corredor com uma chance de 10% de conter uma porta cinza, aparece entre a Sala 94 (room_water_savepoint1) e a Sala 95 (room_water11). Essas são a sala do SAVE Point do "Cristal" e a sala do telescópio de Sans respectivamente. A porta mencionada acima leva a Sala 269.
Uma vez que o protagonista sai da Sala 269 e volta para a Sala 268, a porta desaparece do corredor, mas é possível sair da sala e fazer a porta reaparecer, já que a fun value não reseta até o protagonista sair do corredor. O corredor em si desaparece uma vez que o protagonista sai dele e todas as values vão para 0.
Ao tentar usar o Celular em qualquer uma dessas salas, a mensagem padrão "Não há resposta...." aparece.
Sala 123[]
A Sala 123 (room_water_prebird) é um corredor removido com grama alta que provavelmente se conectaria com a Sala 99 (room_water_bird), onde o pássaro que carrega o protagonista por cima de um vão desproporcionalmente pequeno fica e a Sala 116 (room_water_friendlyhub), onde a encruzilhada de seis caminhos de Cachoeira fica. Os personagens nesta área mencionam que este corredor é um local para caçar insetos.
Sala 123
Um personagem desconhecido do lado esquerdo da grama alta menciona que "tem alguém com um sorriso estranho atrás de você". O personagem não visto possivelmente some depois do diálogo ser ouvido. Este personagem com o "sorriso assustador" pode ser o Mystery Man visto na Sala 269 que pode ser Gaster e a evidência que apoia esta teoria é pela existência da palavra "sorriso" no diálogo, já que a música que toca na Entrada Número Dezessete é chamada de mus_smile. Porém, também poderia ser Flowey (que segue o protagonista durante o jogo), Sans ou até mesmo o humano caído.
Sala 272[]
Sala 272
A Sala 272 é preta e tem uma figura fantasmagórica (apelidada de "Redacted", já que o nome de seu arquivo é spr_redacted_a) no meio dela, que se torna menos transparente conforme o protagonista se aproxima. Se ele(a) tenta interagir com o NPC, ele dá "* [redacted]" (redigido) em Wingdings em caixa baixa como resposta, que indica que uma conversa foi planejada aqui mas foi removida por motivos de segurança.[3] Sair da Sala 272 leva para a Sala de Teste de Som, onde o protagonista pode ouvir quatro músicas, incluindo o Tema de Gaster.
Todas menos uma das músicas podem ser tocadas e trocadas entre si. Ao ouvir o Tema de Gaster, as outras três não podem mais ser tocadas. Depois que a música acaba, o texto "Obrigado pelo seu feedback! Vejo você em breve!" aparece e ou o jogo crasha ou o protagonista é posto na sala com a vara de pesca na Floresta de Nevada, sugerindo que esta sala inicialmente seria focada em Gaster.
Para acessar esta sala e evitar as telas de erro do Cachorro Irritante, é preciso usar um editor de texto hexadecimal para mudar o valor do "Dogcheck".[4]
O Estábulo[]
Uma sprite não vista para o estábulo.
Dentro dos arquivos do jogo, há linhas que indicam que um estábulo estava planejado para estar no jogo. Haveria uma lata de lixo onde uma chave seria achada; se a chave fosse trazida para o estábulo, a mesma figura da sala 272 apareceria e diria "* x" em Wingdings.

Entrada Número Dezessete
Na Sala 264 (room_gaster), o texto ao lado é mostrado em Wingdings em caixa alta. Enquanto ele pode parecer ser a inexistente sétima entrada do Verdadeiro Laboratório, é possível que isso seja uma pista falsa, já que há uma versão alternativa da décima sétima entrada nos arquivos do jogo antes da versão 1.001-4, que adicionou a localização japonesa. A outra entrada parece ter sido escrita por Alphys, já que tem o mesmo formato e estilo de escrita do que as outras entradas e fala sobre os experimentos com Determinação.[5] Ambas as entradas são inacessíveis em um jogo normal; a de Alphys só pode ser achada nos arquivos do jogo e a de Gaster só pode ser achada por manipulação de SAVE ou debug mode. A Sala 264 é seguida pela sala do gerador do Verdadeiro Laboratório.

Uma vez que a mensagem acaba, a tela fica preta por um segundo antes do jogo fechar. O áudio que toca durante esta entrada é chamado de "mus_smile" nos códigos do jogo. Este arquivo pode ser acelerado em 1000% para revelar a risada de Muffet invertida e repetida.[6] Um trecho da Entrada Número Dezessete também esteve disponível em deltarune.com/him.png em 2015.
"O Homem que Fala pelas Mãos"[]
Durante uma das viagens com a Pessoa do Rio, ele(a) fala "Cuidado com o homem que fala pelas mãos." Há uma especulação que isso se refere a Gaster já que a fonte usada na Entrada Número Dezessete (room_gaster) usa símbolos de mãos.
Uma fala similar da Pessoa do Rio é "Cuidado com o homem que veio do outro mundo." Considerando as similaridades que ela tem em relação a outra fala, ela pode se referir a Gaster ou o monstro So Sorry, cujo texto ao checar é "Esta criatura está definitivamente no tempo e espaço errados!" e também pelo nome do tema de So Sorry nos códigos ser mus_wrongworld.

Goner Kid[]
Não há evidências suficientes para dizer se a Goner Kid está relacionada com Gaster. Como os seguidores dele, a sprite desta criança tem pequenas diferenças comparada com a sprite do monstro que ela foi inspirada. A roupa da Goner Kid tem um padrão xadrez, tem um laço ou dois chifres/espinhos de um lado, duas linhas atrás de sua cabeça e seus olhos não tem pupilas. Porém, diferente dos seguidores de Gaster, o telefone do protagonista funciona ao tentar ligar para alguém nesta sala e a criança nunca menciona o nome de Gaster.
Seguidores de Gaster[]
O protagonista não pode ligar para Papyrus enquanto um seguidorer de Gaster estiver presente, descrevendo que o celular não liga.
Os Seguidores de Gaster são NPCs cinza que são achados perto dos elevadores de Teraquente quando a fun tem um valor específico. Eles todos se parecem com certos NPCs no jogo com algumas poucas diferenças (exceto pelo seguidor 3, mesmo que um NPC em Deltarune se pareça com ele[7]).
Se o protagonista tenta ligar para Papyrus (ou Papyrus e Undyne) em uma sala com um seguidor, a resposta será "O celular não liga", O protagonista ainda pode tentar ligar para Toriel. O celular funciona normalmente depois de sair da sala.
Goner Clam Girl[]
Goner Clam Girl, também conhecida como Clam Goner, é um NPC de Cachoeira exclusivo da versão de Nintendo Switch de Undertale. Se a fun value é de exatamente 81, Clam Girl tem um diálogo diferente no epílogo da Verdadeira Rota Pacifista. Na sua última fala, ela se torna Goner Clam Girl e a música Reunited para. Ela então desaparece com o mesmo som que Mystery Man e o seguidor 2, que mostra uma possível conexão entre ela e Gaster.
Sans[]
Sans pode ter uma conexão com W. D. Gaster pela oficina atrás de sua casa e o nome de suas armas na Rota Genocida.
Goner Kid, o NPC que discute sobre linhas do tempo alternativas diz "Um guarda-chuva...? Mas não está chovendo." Isso pode estar relacionado com a música "It's Raining Somewhere Else" que toca quando Sans leva o protagonista jantar no MTT Resort e na sua oficina.
O Tumblr official Undertale tem um post escrito como se fosse Sans, e ele inclui a fala "alem do mais, é rude falar sobre pessoas que estao ouvindo, certo?"[8] Esta fala é similar a uma fala do Seguidor de Gaster 3.
Room 80 (room_tundra_sansbasement) is a workshop that has four drawers and a strange machine covered up with a curtain. One drawer contains a badge, and another contains a photo album with numerous people that the protagonist does not recognize. If the protagonist has encountered Clam Girl earlier in the route, interacting with the drawer causes a card to slip into the protagonist's view; it displays a poorly drawn picture of 3 people, with the words "don't forget" written on it. The other two drawers causes the protagonist to read the blueprint on the countertop, which is said to be written in unintelligible symbols or handwriting that could potentially be related to W. D. Gaster or Alphys, as she also writes in illegible handwriting, as shown in the note before entering the True Lab.[9]
The note written on the picture with three people is most likely from Sans; Unlike Papyrus, he does not write in his typeface, which can be seen when the protagonist reads the note on his treadmill.
In Room 264 in one of the parts of Gaster's version of Entry Number 17, he says, "What do you two think?" By "two," Gaster may be referring to Sans and Alphys, as it is hinted at the end of the True Pacifist Route that they had a past together and Gaster could be the missing link to where they possibly could have had a relationship.

The broken machine in the room has been said to be unfixable according to Toby Fox.[10] This means that the machine was never meant to be fixed.
Additionally, one of the types of attacks Sans uses against the protagonist during his boss fight in the Genocide Route is called the "Gaster Blaster," suggesting it's connected to W. D. Gaster. If the Genocide Route is aborted by sparing Papyrus and the protagonist interacts with his box of bones, Papyrus says that if he had used his "special attack," he would have "blasted" the protagonist away, but suddenly realizes that he can't find it. The use of the verb "blast" implies a connection to the Gaster Blaster, suggesting that the Gaster Blaster was either Papyrus's missing special attack or was somehow created by Sans from Papyrus's attack.

- Se tentar nomear a criança caída de "Gaster", o jogo imediatamente volta a mostrar a história inicial, sem nenhuma explicação.
- Na batalha com Sans na rota genocida, o esqueleto usa os Gaster Blasters, que como o próprio nome diz, possui uma possível relação com WingDings Gaster.
- Flowey pode ter alguma relação com a morte de Gaster, já que, na entrada número 18 do Laboratório Verdadeiro, Alphys escreve "a flor sumiu", e a entrada número 17 foi feita antes da entrada número 18.
- "W. D. Gaster" is presumed to be a combination of the fonts "Wingdings" (the font Entry 17 is written in) and "Aster" (similar to the font Sans snores in during his battle).
- W. D. Gaster's name could also be a reference to "M.D. Seeger," the alias of Shigeru Miyamoto used in the EarthBound end credits (as "Opening Rock Guitar").[11]
- Attempting to name the fallen human "Gaster" causes the game to return to the intro.
- In the PS4 and PS Vita versions, this would cause the game to crash. As of v1.03–4, it simply restarts the game.
- If the protagonist's name is changed to "Gaster" through the SAVE files, the ability to reset becomes unavailable as the game restarts upon clicking the Reset button.
Examining a refrigerator in the True Lab while the room is still under mist triggers a description of a man believed to be W. D. Gaster.
- In the True Lab, if the protagonist does not activate the fans and enters the area where the protagonist encounters Snowdrake's Mother and interacts with the second refrigerator in the room, the narration describes a figure obscured by the fog in the shape of a man. This figure could be Gaster. However, it may simply be the "watching man"[12] Amalgamate that tucks the protagonist into bed in the True Lab.
- It could also be the "Man" character from Deltarune, as he is described in a similar fashion. The narration also describes another refrigerator as "a tree, ripe with delicious fruit," like those the Man hides behind.
- The voice bites used in Room 264 (
snd_wngdng1throughsnd_wngdng7) are excerpts from the text-to-speech voices used inabc_123_a, possibly indicating a connection to Toby Fox or other meta-knowledge. - If Entry Number Seventeen is considered, Gaster is the only individual character to have a unique typeface and soundbite without their face accompanying the text box when he talks. The other main-game examples of a unique soundbite but no dialogue portrait are Mettaton (during his initial form) and the species of Temmie, though they both keep the Determination Mono typeface.
- The figure in Room 272 speaks with an asterisk and in lowercase, similar to Sans. Entry Number Seventeen is written in uppercase and without an asterisk, similar to Papyrus.
- It is possible that Gaster could have created the DT Extraction Machine in the True Lab as Alphys uses blueprints to operate it.[13] These may be the blueprints found in Sans's Workshop.
- On the official Undertale Tumblr, Sans suggests doing research about Shyren's lower body. Shyren's head and body are two different beings, but an optical illusion makes them look like one entity.[8]
- This could relate to the face that shows up on the body of the Mystery Man. Further interpretation could be that the Mystery Man is actually two different monsters or an Amalgamate.
- If Mystery Man is turned upside down, their clothing and hands resemble another face. Notably, before interaction, this face appears to be surprised, but after interaction, it appears calmer, contrary to Mystery Man's surprised expression.

- Mystery Man shares some visual similarities with Uboa from Yume Nikki. This appearance is also shared with Dr. Andonuts from Toby's EarthBound Halloween Hack.
- In the game files, Gaster's Theme is named
mus_st_him, unlike the other rooms in the sound test that have their song names explicitly shown (such asmus_st_happytown). snd_mysterygouses the same piano sound as Gaster's Theme.- Until version 1.001, events related to Gaster were inaccessible unless a SAVE file was edited to have "fun" capitalized to "Fun."
- In a tweet, Toby Fox showed very early concept art for Papyrus. In the same image was a note saying that Papyrus "had a _ named _" with the nouns censored out. It is possible this refers to Gaster, due to the popular theory that Gaster is related to Sans and Papyrus in some way.[14] This note may also refer to the unimplemented character Grandpa Semi.
- The Gaster card is not included in the official Undertale tarot, which indicates that this card is not canon. Toby Fox has also stated the merchandise is not canon.[15]
- Gaster's Theme is 17 seconds long, possibly alluding to Entry Number Seventeen.
- Mystery Man appeared faintly on the cover of Fangamer's UNDERTALE Complete Vinyl Soundtrack Box Set for a brief period of time, but the image was removed from later releases.[16]
