This page is used to catalog various NPCs that were cut from the final version of Undertale. This page also includes test NPCs which may never have been intended to appear in the final game. This page includes characters that appeared in both the game's code and the official UNDERTALE Art Book with developed sprites.

Deleted NPCs[]

98 Robot[]

This robot NPC is one of the only fully developed NPCs that was cut from the game entirely. They were said to have been present in Hotland with many other robots as well, but ended up not fitting in with Mettaton's presence.[1] They appear to have an antenna on the top of their head and the number 98 on their chest. Their color scheme consists of orange, purple, and black. Their dialogue exchanges with the protagonist are unknown.

100 Robot[]

This robot NPC was a concept that was cut from the game entirely. Unlike their counterpart, 98 Robot, this robot's sprite never made it into the game's files. Their identity was revealed in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. This robot is very similar to the 98 robot, except their colors consist of green instead of orange. They have the number 100 painted on the sides of their body. In the concept art, both the front and side view of this character can be seen, both sides including an idle and talking frame. Their overall role and dialogue with the character is unknown, or even where they were planned to be, but it can be assumed that they were cut for reasons similar to the 98 Robot.

Lizard Person[]

This lizard NPC was a concept that was cut from the game entirely. He made it to the sprite stage of design, but never made it to the game's actual code. His existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. The first design appears to have glasses with their eyes open, and the second appears to have his eyes closed with shading on his sides. Both models have yellow skin and a red shirt. The character bears a resemblance to Alphys, with the same yellow skin, tail, glasses, and similar head shape. Toby has said that this character was supposed to appear in the Hotland area among other lizard people. The design was also said to remind him of a "cheese-it".

Love Crab[]

This crab NPC was a concept design that was made into a sprite but never made into the game's code. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. They appear to be a giant orange crab with pink eyes and a pink heart on their chest. They also have pink at the end of their legs and a heart-shaped body. This character appears among other Waterfall NPCs, suggesting that they may have appeared there if they ever made it into the final version.

Artist NPC[]

This NPC was a concept design that was made into several sprites, but never made it into the final game. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. They appear to have a triangular head, pinkish-purple skin, a yellow dress with a changing design (depending on the sprite), and holding what could be a flower. They also have a somewhat feminine appearance. Toby does not go into great detail when explaining this character, only leaving the description "someone likes art". This may suggest that they were an artist.

Turtle Businessman[]

This turtle-like NPC was a concept design that never made it into the final game. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. They appear to be wearing glasses, green pants, a white coat, a red tie, holding a black cane in one hand, and holding a brown suitcase in the other. His skin is light green and he has a balding head, with only a few strands on the side. No description is given to this character at all, so his role in the game and reason for being cut is completely unknown.

Jester Demons[]

These NPCs were all different NPCs that were cut from the final version of Undertale. They are visually similar to Red Demon. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. According to Toby, the blue Jesters that can be seen at the right were originally a "frowning" Jester concept and that they were cut because (in his own words) "he forgot". The other two disfigured NPCs were originally planned to be Amalgamate NPCs, but he ended up not going through with that concept. The final sprite was not described, but they suit a red jacket and yellow skin. Their dialogue with their character is unknown, but it might have been similar to that with the Demon that appeared in the game.

Nest NPC[]

This NPC was cut from the game entirely. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. In the book, their nest's sprite appears to have been produced but the character that appeared out of it never did. The concept shows that a giant head with a stretchy neck would have popped out and said: "Bless This Nest".

Blue Echo Flower Explainer[]

This NPC is an alternative colored version of the Echo Flower Explainer which can be seen at the left. This character never made it to the game's code. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. It is unknown if this was intended to be a separate character or an alternative color. Next to this character was non-sprited concepts for fish people that shared his body. It is unknown if he was supposed to be one of these, as they appear to have different attire.

Ficus Licker NPCs[]

These NPCs are alternative versions of the Ficus Licker which can be seen on the left. These characters never made it to the final version of the game, or its code. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. In the book, Toby described that these were just generic characters that were made as placeholders, but were never used as such. Only one of the four made it into the final game, as the Ficus Licker and as the NPC found in Room 304. Each seems to display a different emotion/personality.

Coral NPCs[]

These Coral NPCs were cut from the game entirely, not even making it to the source code. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. The first one appears to be a humanoid with light green and purple colors. He has coral for hair and for appendages. His "family" appears to be regular coral with the same color scheme. Unlike most removed NPCs, these were given a more detailed background. A quote above Coraler's character said: "Coraler will join the Royal Guard... They will train in the city. I'll be the one to free my family!" The family had a quote as well: "I'm Coraler's family." Toby himself did not go into any detail on why these characters were scrapped from the final product.

Plant NPCs[]

These two plant NPCs were cut from the game entirely, never making it into the game's final code. Their existence was brought to light in the official UNDERTALE Art Book. They appear to have bush-like bodies with brown stems for legs. They also look a bit like lettuce or cabbage. Next to the sprites was a crudely drawn plant that said: "I prefer not to discuss my personal life." Other than this, Toby did not go into any detail on these character's existence or their role in the game. It is unknown if these two sprites were meant to be separate characters or the same character is separate poses.

Cut Onionsan Designs[]

These NPCs are earlier iterations of Onionsan that can be found in the UNDERTALE art book. Toby said that he designed these characters last minute and then never ended up putting them into the final version of the game. The final design seems to have been the one that inspired the sprite that made it into the final version of the game. The final design had a total of 6 different variants created for their specific design alone. On their sprite page, the name "Ninoon" is listed, which may have been an original name for the character.

Orange Attack Explainer[]

Rabbit Girl and Cinnamon overworld

This NPC would explain orange attacks. It uses Rabbit Girl's sprite as a placeholder and was going to appear in Waterfall.[2] Its dialogue is seemingly a follow-up of Sans's explanation of blue attacks.

Dialogue[]

  • That skeleton over there just told me how to dodge "orange attacks."
  • What did he say...? Something like...
  • "Traffic lights have three lights on them."
  • "The third light, the green one, means GO."
  • "The first light, the red one, means STOP."
  • "The second light, the yellow one, means YIELD."
  • "In order to dodge an orange attack, you must be moving."
  • "So, just think of it this way..."
  • "Red and yellow lights together make orange."
  • "Then you obey the rule of the leftover green light, which means GO."
  • "Easy, huh?"
  • "Just think of a red and yellow traffic light which is actually green."
  • Yeah...
  • Then he started talking about plaid attacks...

Test NPCs[]

Lava Creature[]

This lava creature NPC is found in the game's code with "test" in their name. They are a thin red creature with a triangular head, a pair of eyes, and a mouth, making them resemble lava dripping into a puddle. These creatures can be found in Room 274, where interacting with them causes the game to crash. A deleted pole item similar to this creature can be found in the game's code as well, but it has no face.

In the official UNDERTALE Art Book, these characters make a cameo in a test room. It appears to be similar to Room 274, with Toriel talking at the bottom and these creatures walking around. The only difference is that this room is that it has textures, as opposed to Room 274's dark nothingness.

Humanoid NPC[]

This NPC was used purely as a test for other NPCs in the game. They appear to be a short humanoid with light red skin, red-orange eyes, and a nose. Its bland appearance suggests that this NPC never was intended to make it into the final product.

There are a total of eight different variants of this character's sprite, two different kinds for each position. Each pair seems to make the character bounce. It is unknown what they are being used to test for, but similar to all other NPCs, they only have a pair of sprites that are used to make the sprites move.
